Horseshoe Flattop: Extreme Military Haircut

The Flattop Horseshoe aka Horseshoe haircut is a military style cut that is popular among the Marines. The Horseshoe is a derivate from the regular Flattop haircut and the Horseshoe is frowned upon the Marines as it is seen as a too extreme haircut. However, law enforcement agents in the United States as well as other military men from other countries are allowed the Horseshoe haircut.

See for yourself, long live the Horseshoe cut!

I took this picture to my barber and told him to cut like this. I looks nice but wished he would have skinned the side more. Do you use a razor to do the sides or what?

        Thanks.

          Hello there Ervin!

The sides in that picture were done with a hair clipper that had no guiding comb attached. This is the equivalent of what’s usually called a number zero or #0 hair clipper length. It’s pretty much the shortest hair length for a hair clipper, although it can get even shorter but we’re talking millimeters here.

I suggest that you go back to your barber and ask him to buzz the sides and back of your head shorter. Tell him to use no guiding comb on the hair clipper. As bare a hair clipper haircut as possible. If, for some reason, he can’t buzz your hair shorter, then either use your own hair clipper or do it like a man and just shave everything except for the horseshoe hair. I’ve shaved some Horseshoe hairstyles in the past for some of our barbershop customers and I can tell you that the shaved Horseshoe looks even better than a hair-clipper cut Horseshoe Flattop!

I hope that you get your shorter Horseshoe ASAP, my friend!

I have a Oster clipper model 76. I have the 00000 blade, will this work? If so I will get my horseshoe flattop and use this blade to finish up the sides. I had a barber years ago shave the sides with razor. When I had the sides shaved with razor. It felt nice and cool on the pillow and felt wonderful. I liked it but he retired. I wish you were around Coldwater mi. 49036 .
            Thanks my friend.

Yes, the Oster 76 hair clipper will work beautifully for the Horseshoe haircut. The 00000 blade will also work great, just make sure you don’t clip in anything else to it. It should be just the hair clipper, the blade and your hair, all ready to go.

When you are clipping the side and back make sure to clip them all evenly. What I mean is to not do any fading of the hair, you want all the hair on your head to be clipped with the 00000 blade and to only have the Horseshoe hair on the top of your head. Not only is this one of th freshest haircuts for men with such a near shaved length but it’s also a dang fun hair clipper to get!

If you’re up for it, you can post the finished haircut picture here, or I can feature your haircut on this website i post.I’m always good to feature our readers and any military haircut dude will always be welcome here. Shame on the distance, my friend, I’m a bit far indeed!

Also, I too have a Classic 76 clipper with a 00000 Clipper blade. We could exchange advice and tips on haircuts if you like all military haircuts. I would like to show my appreciation for a fellow hair-clipper buff.

      Hi Ervin,

You can send me an email in the page at the bottom. You could also upload the image to a free image hosting account so that I could get it and tell me the address of the image either in your comment or in your reply to that page. If you need to have anything removed from the picture (anything that you don’t want it to show), I will remove it if you don’t know how to. Don’t worry.

Thanks, Nathan. It’s readers like you who really make me happy to posts on the military haircuts!

If you have an electric shaver (like the one you use for your face) you can used this to shave the sides and back and the landing strip if you feel so inclined. Had mine done yesterday and it looks great.

Hello… Can the owner email me back. I have questions about the Horseshoe flattop and a photo. My post of December 24 here didn’t go live but I got no private email response.

The USMC developed it, many Drill Instructors wore it. It is the best haircut a man can have. Banned from the service now as too extreme, while they enlist transexuals men and women who claim they are the opposite sex of what they are and have radical surgery and hormone therapy to pretend otherwise.
